The sudden death of Frank Smith on Sunday forenoon came as a shock to the people of this community, and those who had been talking of him on the streets the same forenoon, when he was to all appearances in good health, were loth to give credence to the report. His old friends and associates of the past years mourn his untimely death, while many who knew him only in business relations mourn him for his many excellent qualities.

A few days ago he complained of a pain in his chest but thought little of the matter. On Sunday morning he arose as usual and after doing the chores about the house, came down town and got a morning paper and returned home. About 11 o'clock he complained of a severe pain in his chest and was persuaded by Mrs. Smith to go to bed. She started for the kitchen to prepare some remedy and had barely left the room when she heard him fall. He had evidently tried to get up and walk, and had fallen. By the time she reached him he had expired without a single word. A doctor was summoned. Death evidently resulted from neuralgia and heart failure.

Frank H. Smith, son of Nathan and Phoebe Smith, was born on New Year's day, 1838, about 40 miles from Montreal, Canada. He had nine brothers and three sisters, of whom, there are only five brothers now living. His parents moved to Chicago in 1844 where they lived for several years, when they moved to a farm in Burlington township. Here the father lived until he reached the age of 90 years, and the mother died when 85 years of age.

Frank Smith settled in Sycamore in 1866, and has lived here ever since, with only brief absences. He was married to Miss Anna Baker who survives. Three children were born to them, but they have passed away. Ned was killed near Maywood about nine years ago while in the employ of the Great Western railroad. His son, now about 10 years old, has been living with his grandparents. Lyle Smith, the elder son died about four years ago.

Mr. Smith received the appointment of postmaster, during Mr. Cleveland's first administration and served for four years. Thirteen years ago he was made a deputy by Sheriff Hiram Ostrander and served for four years. When Dan Hohm was elected sheriff Mr. Smith was appointed to his former position which he ably filled and last year Sheriff Rompf appointed him as deputy. While filling this office, Mr. Smith has always carried out his duties in a careful and painstaking manner, and never has a word of criticism been said against him. He has been a Mason for many years and was a member of Sycamore lodge and commandery.

The funeral services will be in charge of this society on Thursday at 1 o'clock at the home on Main street.

The interment will be in Elmwood cemetery.
