Funeral Service for Thelma Naomi Lawrence, 75 of Sisseton, SD was held on Saturday, December 2, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at the Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, SD with Rev. Charles Chan officiating.

Pallbearers were John Leith Jr., Jordan Leith, Joshua Lawrence, Landon Leith, Wayne Heminger, Mike Heminger, Isiah Lahm, and Marcel DuMarce.

Honorary Pallbearers were Yvonne Williams, Carol Adams, Sarah Bird, Brenda Barse, Bonnie Thompson, Mona Renville, Rosebud Marshall, Cleone Provost, Kay Bursheim and Naomi Renville. Pianist was Billy Kohl.

Interment was at St. Mary's Episcopal Cemetery, Agency Village, SD.

There was an all night wake service on Friday, December 1, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. at the Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, SD. The Cahill Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Thelma Naomi Bird was born on October 23, 1931 in Sisseton, SD to Samuel Beeman and Laura (Renville) Bird. She attended Jones Country School, Old Agency School and Flandreau Indian School. She went on and got her GED.

Thelma was united in marriage to LaVerne Sylvan Lawrence on September 9, 1951. They lived in Dallas, TX, and Oakland, CA, before moving to Peever, SD, then to Agency Village, SD. She worked for the Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribe Day Care Center as a cook, and then she worked for the Tribal Elderly Program as a cook's helper. LaVerne passed away on December 27, 1995. She enjoyed cooking, making pillows, reading, babysitting, and doing crossword puzzles.

Thelma entered the Tekakwitha Living Center on November 28, 2006; she passed away at the Tekakwitha Living Center on November 30, 2006 after a lengthy illness.

Thelma is survived by three sons, Brian Lawrence, Russell Lawrence and Marcus DuMarce all of Agency Village, SD; four daughters, Doris and husband, John Leith of Peever, SD, Marla and husband, Colin Raffety of Ortonville, MN, Marlys and husband, Bruce Lahm of Lincoln, NE, and Joni and husband, Perry Mahpiyasna of Agency Village, SD; one brother, Curtis and wife, Beverly Bird of Peever, SD; three sisters, Lillian Mae Lawrence of Agency Village, SD, Sylvia and husband, Mike Owen of Peever, SD and Karen Heminger of Peever, SD; 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, LaVerne Jr.; one sister, Beverly Bird; and three brothers, Kenneth, Milton, and Lincoln Bird.
