Carl W. Coats was born on January 2, 1947 in Non, Oklahoma to Harve C. and Clara E. Purser Coats. He passed away on September 18, 2016 in Watonga, Oklahoma at the age of 69.

Carl attended Lookeba Schools. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War serving in Korea serving from 1965-1972. He was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. He moved back to Oklahoma and lived in Hinton and worked with Dave Turner at the funeral home. In 1980, he went to work for Gainesville fuel and in 1981, he met the love of his life.

He married Carmel Hernandez on February 14, 1981 in Weatherford, Oklahoma. After a 5 year career, he and Carmel opened Coats Phillips 66 that they owned and operated until retiring in 1998. Carl enjoyed coon hunting, pleasure and competition, traveling all over the country hunting coons. He was a member of the Coon Hunters Association and a member of the First Baptist Church in Hinton.

Survivors Include his wife, Carmel Coats of Watonga, Oklahoma, his children, Michelle Tipton and husband Jason of Somerville, Tennessee, John Coats and wife Jimi of Sayre, Oklahoma, Teral West and wife Tammy of Smithville, Tennessee, Casey Coats and wife Misty of Luling, Louisiana and Tonia Robinson of Watonga, Oklahoma, fourteen grandchildren, his siblings, James B. Coats and wife Lena Faye of Texas, Art Coats and wife Bernice of Hinton and Glenda Newton and husband Royce of Clinton, as well as many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harve and Clara Coats, his grandson, Jeremiah J.J. Cogburn, his brother, Wayne Coats and his sister, Reba Coats.

Services at Union Baptist Church 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 22, 2016, Watonga, Oklahoma with Rev. Dwight McGhee officiating. Burial in Clinton Cemetery, Clinton, Oklahoma.

Services under the direction of Turner Funeral Home, Hinton, Oklahoma.
