Son of Columbus Gilbert and Florence Shoptaw Casey. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, J.T. and Paul Gilbert Casey.

Survivors include his wife, Frankie Denton Casey; 2 sons; nephew; niece; and 3 grandchildren.

Robert graduated from Russellville High School in 1950. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Arkansas Polytechnic College, his Master of Music Education degree from North Texas State University, and his Doctor of Education degree from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

He held teaching positions as band director at Danville, Hazen, DeQueen, Crossett, and St. Charles (Missouri) Public Schools. After completing his doctoral work, he returned to his Alma Mater, Arkansas Tech, as Assistant Director of Bands and Instructor of Music Theory. After the death of his long-time friend and mentor, Gene Witherspoon, he became Music Department Head, a position he would hold for 18 years until his retirement in 1998. He was named Professor of Music Emeritus in 2002.

As a music educator, Robert participated in many professional organizations, including the Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association, Arkansas Music Education Association, Four States Bandmasters Association, Music Educators National Conference, Phi Beta Mu National Band Fraternity, as well as professional and service music fraternities Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and Kappa Kappa Psi.

From 1948 through 1958 he served in the Arkansas National Guard.

Robert was a member of First United Methodist Church in Russellville, where he was a proud member of both the FUMC Chancel Choir and Lois Griffin Friendship Class.

In retirement, with his devoted wife of 63 years, Frankie, forever at his side, he enjoyed entertaining, traveling, fishing, and woodworking. Most of all he loved the communion of his many friends, former students, colleagues, and relatives. His long reach of fellowship will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation at Humphrey Funeral Home will be Friday, September 23, from 6:00 PM till 8:00 PM. After a private burial at Booher Cemetery, an informal reception will be held at First United Methodist Church at 10:15am on Saturday, September 24, followed by a Celebration of Robert’s life at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Robert L. and Frankie D. Casey Guest Artist Series, Arkansas Tech University Foundation, 8820 Tech Lane, Russellville, AR 72801.
