Son of Asa W. Alger and Margaret 'Peggy' Dovel, who were married 18 Fed 1833 in Page County, VA.

Like his father, Nathaniel was a farmer. He married Elizabeth Keziah "Bettie" Petefish, daughter of David Josiah Petefish/Peterfish and Elizabeth S. Dovel/Doval, on 21 Sep 1865 in Page County, VA. At the rime of their marriage Elizabeth was the widow of Robert Franklin Nauman, a Confederate Soldier who died while in a Union POW Camp during the American Civil War. She was also the mother of their young son, William Thomas "Tommy" Nauman, who was raised most of his life by Nathaniel.

They had 5 children:
-- i. Martha Jane (Alger) Smith
-- ii. Maggie Cornelia (Alger) Silvous
-- iii. Elizabeth F. "Allie" Alger
-- iv. Milton Alger
-- vi. Jacob H. Alger

Nathaniel died near Hamburg at the age of 33. His cause of death is unknown.
