** In the 1850 U.S. Census, Barbara is recorded twice. First, enumerated on 13 Jul, in the home of her maternal grandparents, George and Ann [Peeksly] Dovel. Second, enumerated on 19 Jul, in the home of her parents. It appears that Barbara was probably visiting with her grandparents over the summer and the enumerator assumed that the little girl he saw was living there. He asked name, relationship, age and birth questions and simply added her to the household on his enumeration sheet. William McDonough was the enumerator in both households, so Barbara probably was still in her grandparents home when he visited the home of her parents. When asked, they simply provided him with the names, etc. of all their children, whom they regarded as living in their home, regardless of where they may spend their summers.

** Barbara's husband, Abraham, was her paternal uncle before he made her his wife following the death of his first wife, Rebecca [Stover] Alger. She is recorded residing with Abraham, as his wife, with the two children born of his previous marriage in a U.S. Census enumerated in Hampshire Co, VA on 14 Aug 1860.

** In a U.S. Census enumerated in Johnston, Shenandoah Co, VA on 19 Jun 1880, we find Abraham residing with his 3rd wife, Elizabeth [Harshberger]. The family surname was spelled Algere. In their home was a 15 year old son of Abraham's named Charles... and now we know that Barbara bore Abraham a son before she passed.

** Various spellings of Barbara's surname include Alger and Algier.

The below record shows when Barbara was born and when she died. Since it also reveals that she was buried somewhere in Shenandoah Iron Works in 1870, her death was likely more towards the end of December, 1869.
