Georg Friedrich Christian Freye was born in Drakenburg, son of Otto Friedrich Christian Freye and Sophia Maria Pranga. He immigrated to the US aboard the "Edmund," which arrived in New Orleans on March 11, 1848. After working for his brother-in-law, Johann F. Rodekohr in Lafayette Co., MO, he traveled arcoss the plains, arriving in Seattle in the Spring of 1853.

He married Louisa Catherine Frye, daughter of Arthur Armstrong Denny, on Oct. 25, 1860. Louisa and George had six children: James Marion; Mary Louise; Sarah Sophia; George Arthur; Roberta Gertrude; and Elizabeth Helen.

George built the Frye Opera House, the largest venue north of San Francisco, but it burned in the Great Seattle Fire of 1889. He was a major hotel owner and capitalist in pioneer Seattle.
