Barbara Ann Porterfield Vorhees passed on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at BeeHive Homes in Lamesa, Texas.
She was born on May 31, 1939 in Lamesa, Texas to Ressie and A.H. Porterfield. She was married to Thomas E. Vorhees and resided with him for 54 years in Odessa. Barbara was diagnosed with a chronic neurological disease in 2006. After Tom passed, Barbara moved to Lamesa to be near family. Barbara remained a joy to family and staff at the BeeHive. Even though she could not speak, she liked to smile and laugh.
Barbara was very active at Unity Church of Practical Christianity of West Texas. She served as President of the Board of Directors, as Director of Music and anything else needing to be done. After retirement from Texaco Barbara studied spiritually and enjoyed her spiritual journey. She was a "master" gardener, and a wonderful cook; she sang with a traveling group from Sherwood Baptist and learned to fly small aircraft. Her favorite social past time was playing bridge with her family.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Vorhees of Odessa, and her father, A.H. Porterfield of Lamesa. Reese Porterfield of Lamesa survives her older child. Other survivors include Barbara's only child, Kimberlee Sanchez and her husband, Jake, and children Kane, Sydnee and Lathan, all of Ruidosa, NM. She is also survived by her siblings, and nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; her sisters, Jeannie Colls of San Diego and Flora Bagboy and husband Bill of Houston and their children and grandchildren, and brother M. Don and wife Kristy Porterfield of Loveland; nieces and nephews include, J. Don and Kaki Porterfield of Lamesa, Lee Ann Shandle and husband Scott and children of San Diego, CA, Kathy and Krista Reed of Houston, Kody and Cheyenne Porterfield of Brock, and Karleigh Porterfield of Levelland. Barbara is also survived by loving cousins from Tulsa, Lamesa, Eastland and New Orleans.
Barbara was highly regarded and loved by all whom new her. She was a wonderful family member, friend, co-worker and employee. Her church in Odessa will always value her gifts and love.
Barbara loved life. She filled it with her many gifts and was a joy to all. Her spirit will be a strong presence for all who loved her.
Services for Barbara will be at 3:00 PM Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Odessa, with Janie Garmes and Brother Igo officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sunset Funeral Home.
