The Tam Family by Fred J. Tam

"... he left the parental roof at an early age and worked in Maryland. He was a rugged lad and he helped the settlers clear the land, tend their meager crops, and build their cabins. After some time spent in Maryland, he moved on to Pennsylvania where he was engaged in the same kind of work. For a little while he was in New York, but he soon was back in Maryland. Here in Maryland he met and married a girl of that state. We know that both she and James were very young when they married and that they became the parents of a large family, but at this time the wife's name is unknown, also the names of all except three of the children are unknown. These three children came later to Indiana.....this family lived for several years in Maryland, and then moved to Pennsylvania. To help maintain his large family, James taught school for several winters."

When most of the older children had married and started homes of their own, the wife... died. Two of young children with an older brother came to Indiana and settled in Cass County in 1834. James.... moved to Columbiana County in eastern Ohio. Here he met and married his second wife, Rebecca McNutt. To them was born one son, Moses, and also three daughters."

"In 1852.... James, with his wife and son, Moses, came to Rock Creek Township between Huntington and Warren, Indiana. Here at the age of seventy-six years, but not too old to shoulder an ax, he, with the help of his seventeen year old son Moses, began to carve a farm from the, then, almost unbroken wilderness. Needless to say, he was a man of boundless energy."

"James Tam was one of those kind, considerate, and sociable individuals who gets along very well with everyone. He was a good conversationalist, and a superb story teller. Because of his ability to entertain, he was a welcome guest everywhere. He was a very religious man, and early in life joined the Freewill Baptists, but later became a Methodist. He was keenly interested in politics, but if he ever held any office, no record of it is available now."
