Viola Beal Smith was born 23 Dec 1906 in Myton, Duchesne, Utah, the first if nine children born to William Smith and Maud Thompson. She spent her youth growing up in the Uintah Basin. On 17 Nov 1924,Viola Married Edwin Eugene Madison in Vernal, Uintah, Utah. They were the parents of two children, Eugene Edwin and William LaVor Madison. Viola and Ed divorced.

On 11 Jan 1941 Viola Married Clifford Robert Thayer (1918-2001) in Eureka, Humboldt, California. They were the parents of two children, Clifford Frank "Frank" Thayer and Patricia Andrea Thayer.

Viola worked for many years in the Lakeview Public Schools as head cook in the cafeteria. She loved to cook and was one of the greatest. She was also an expert seamstress and enjoyed doing a variety of crafts.

She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints, and served a number of stake missions with her husband Clifford. She also loved camping, hunting and fishing. Her devotion and love of family has inspired many meritorious works.

Viola died 12 April 1982 in Lakeview, Lake, Oregon and was buried next to her sister, Grace, until her husband Clifford joined her in 2001.
