Roy Robert Abell, son of Zadok Abell and Mary Elizabeth née Sharp Abell was born in 1887 in Palo Pinto County, Texas. He married Miss Nena Scott (daughter of George Scott and Katie née Ham Scott) in 1917. He served with the United States military during World War I the following year.

Roy worked as a roughneck in the Mineral Wells oil fields until he moved with his wife and two sons, Roy Jr. and Earl C. to Lorenzo in 1921. While living in Lorenzo they had two more sons, Lyman and Billy Wayne. Roy operated a service station on Lorenzo's main street near the train depot.

Sometime later a car salesman persuaded Roy to order one car from him for $50 down. When he received the car and sold it, he ordered another one. This was how he became a Chevrolet salesman.

In 1936 the Abell family moved to Ralls where they owned and operated Abell Chevrolet until Roy Sr´s. death in 1960.
