The family made the short move to a farmhouse in the Middle Creek area when she was an infant, and she spent her childhood there.
Vergene attended church at Middle Creek Missionary Baptist Church and got her elementary education at the one room school across the road from the church.
Ottie Barr moved his family to Wayne County near Fairfield, during the winter of 1932-1933, and Vergene lived there with the family until her marriage to James O. Goin, Oct. 19, 1935.
James and Vergene made their home in McLeansboro, and she worked for a while at Elder Mfg. Shirt Factory, before becoming a full-time homemaker.
The family moved to Evansville in 1956 and she remained a full-time homemaker for a few more years. After her sons were out of high school, she worked for a while at the Kresge Store in Evansville.
She is survived by her son J. Randall Goin (wife Sandra) of Chandler, Ind.; daughter-in-law Carol Goin-Montgomery (husband Bill) of Newburgh, Ind.; sisters Marcella Simpson
(husband Harlan) of Fairfield, and Annabelle Carter of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; brother Eldon Barr (wife Lou) of Columbia, Tenn.; grandchildren Rebecca Herman of San Diego, Calif., Crista Moore (husband Matt) of Avon, Ind., Jay Goin of Los Angeles, Calif., Cari Goin of Newburgh, Ind.; as well as three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son Larry Wayne Goin, sister Vermadell Haegele, brother Dale Barr, as well as brothers who died in infancy Robert Melvin Barr and Randall Dean Barr.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, at Browning Funeral Home in Evansville. Rev. Tom Hubachek will officiate. Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Browning Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held at the Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro, at 1 p.m. Friday. Rev. Delbert Bryant will officiate. Burial will follow at Blooming Grove Cemetery near McLeansboro. There will be a brief visitation period from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Harre Funeral Home prior to the funeral.
