Preceding him in death are his first wife, Hazel Cagle Mehaffey; his second wife, Blanche Parton Mehaffey, and his infant son, William Robert Mehaffey, and ten brothers and sisters, Reuben, Johnson, Robinson, Frank, Betty, Willie Mae, Jay, Claude, Dorcas and Charlie. Surviving members of his family include his son, Walter W. Mehaffey, Jr. and wife Dr. Mary Messer Mehaffey; grandchildren, William Sean Mehaffey and wife, Ivy; Erin Mehaffey Long and husband, Brendan; great grandchildren, Aiden James and Ashlynn Elizabeth Mehaffey and Cassidy Grace Long; brother, Coolidge (Coot) Mehaffey.
