Mass of Christian Burial for Norman Tollerud, 86, of Esmond was held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Esmond. Interment was in the church cemetery. He died May 14, 2001 at Mercy Hospital in Devils Lake.
Fr. Daniel Hoedl was celebrant. Music was provided by soloist John Duchscher, the St. Boniface Choir & organist Helen Arnold. Military rites were accorded by the Esmond VFW Post 4251 & the Neathery-Simensen VFW Post 757 of Devils Lake. Casket bearers were Hugh Colvin, Terry Olson, Robert Tollerud, Llewellyn Hoffner, Victor Lybeck & Michael McIntee. Honorary bearers were members of the Esmond & Devils Lake VFW Posts, the Esmond Knights of Columbus & his many friends. The Nelson Funeral Home of Esmond was in charge of arrangements.
Norman Tollerud was born March 7, 1915 in Esmond to Dorph & Marie Kopperud Tollerud. He was raised in Esmond & graduated from Esmond High School in 1933. He later attended Mayville State College. He enlisted in the Army Air Force Jan. 25, 1942 & served in the South Pacific during WWII. He was discharged in 1945. He married Helen Zerr Nov. 21, 1949 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey. They farmed near Esmond.
He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, a longtime member of the choir & the Knights of Columbus. He was an active member of the Esmond VFW Post 4251 & had served on the Esmond School Board. Norman was active in sports & excelled in track. In 1933, he set the record for the half mile in Benson County.
Survivors include his wife; 3 daughters & 2 sons-in-law, Kathryn & Hugh Colvin of Fargo, Helen Marie Tollerud of Bartlett, Ill. & Joan & Terry Olson of Eden Prairie, Minn.; 2 sons & daughters-in-law, Brian & Becky Tollerud of Fargo & Raymond & Michelle Tollerud of Esmond; 10 grandchildren; & a sister, Agnes Moreen of Detroit Lakes, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents & 4 brothers, Arthur, Julian, Delbert & Richard Tollerud.
