Mary Gabera Zapalac was born on July 25, 1854 in Novy Hrozenkov, Moravia (present-day Czech Republic). She married Paul Zapalac on February 20, 1878. Mary arrived in America in 1890 with her husband Paul, and their 3 children Josef, Lukas, and Anna. They settled in Fayette County and had two more daughters, Rosie and Agnes. The exact date of Mary's death is unknown, since no death records have been found. We only know from family stories that her daughter Agnes was very young when her mother died, and so it is estimated her death must have occurred sometime after the census in June 1900 and before 1905. When Mary fell ill, her husband Paul was out of town on business, so a doctor took her to the hospital in La Grange, where she eventually died, and the hospital had her buried in the La Grange City Cemetery, without notifying her family. Thus, information about her death has always been a bit of a family mystery.
