Geneva Bertholf, Winterset

Geneva Bertholf, 96, died of heart failure Sept. 30, 2000, at the Madison Square Apartments in Winterset.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Ord Christian Union Church. Visitation will be held today (Wednesday, Oct. 4) at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset from 2-8 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in Clark Cemetery, Monroe Township, rural Macksburg.

Geneva Bertholf was born April 5, 1904, to Samuel Griffin and Alice Roxie (Barber) Brown. A 1923 graduate of Patterson High School, she taught rural schools in Jackson and Monroe townships. She later attended Drake University where she obtained a two-year teaching degree and taught at Waukee. Her marriage to Halden Starr Bertholf took place July 27, 1929, in Creston. Geneva was a member of the Ord Christian Union Church where she had been a Sunday school teacher for 40 years, on the church board for 20 years and also served on the church council. She also was a member of the Clover Club and Madison County Antique Club, of which she was once president.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by a son, Halden Clair Bertholf (wife Ginger) of Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Linda Johnson (husband Daryle) of Winterset; a sister, Elma Fogler of Winterset; a brother, Art Brown (wife Lucille) of Patterson; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
