TUFTS, Doris May -97, of Clyde River, NS, died Thursday, December 10, 2015, at Roseway Hospital, Shelburne. Born in Culloden, Digby County, on April 22, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Leander Newton and Dora (Handspiker) Ross. She is survived by her children, Belinda (Bruce) Smith, Halifax, Rhonda Tufts (Dan Fry), Clyde River, and Daryl (Eva) Tufts, London, Ontario; sister, Aldyth Kaye, Digby; grandson, Tristen Tufts, London, Ontario; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Basil Tufts; brothers James, John, Edward, Frank, and Robert Ross, and sister Barbara VanTassell. Doris, also known as "Dode" and "Dodie," was well-known and loved over her long life in the many roles she shared with Basil, from firewood delivery to owning and operating the B/A service station in Clyde River to being a foster parent for many years to dozens of children. Doris and Basil are fondly remembered by many for the pizzas, rides, skating parties, teenage dances hosted in the service station after hours, and for looking the other way over numerous garden raids. Doris was a caregiver to her very core, caring for her grandmother starting at age 15, her ailing husband most of their married life, and countless children. In later years she enjoyed playing cards, getting hugs from her many "boyfriends," and her crafts and puzzles. She saw good in everyone and got joy from all the little things in life that many do not see. She will always be remembered for her kind words, loving heart, and beautiful smile. Cremation has taken place by Huskilson's Funeral Home. Funeral service, officiated by Pastor Cindy Dunnett, will be held at St. Matthew's United Church, Clyde River, on Saturday, December 19, 2015, at 2:00 pm, followed by a gathering in the church basement. Interment will take place at a later date in Culloden Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew's United Church, Clyde River, or PET Projects, Shelburne. Heartfelt thanks go out to the caring staff at Roseway Hospital.
