The 1860 Dade County, MO Census lists William H Morris, 27, wife Octova, 21, and son Leonodas, 6. Son Mount Etna Morris, 3, is next door visiting the Davidson family. Also living with the family is Delila Lockstone, 18, domestic servant, and Abraham Dale, 20, medical student. William is a dry goods merchant, he owns $8,600 in personal property.

Family lore says William moved to St Louis, MO in the early 1860's to continue business in the dry goods business. He had been selling supplies to the Confederate Army when he learned that his brother Edmund J Morris had joined the Union forces in Dade County, MO. He declared that he could not fight or support the other side against his brother and at some point afterward moved to Texas.

An interview of son Mount Etna in 1938 states the family first moved to Grayson County, Texas about 1862 living on a farm for one year. They moved to San Marcos, TX in 1863.

On October 28, 1869 W.H. Morris registered to vote in McLennan County, Texas.

In 1870 the Waco, McLennan County, Texas Census lists William Morris, 39, Octavia, 28, Leonidas, 13, Mount Etna, 11, Lola, 7, Clay, 5 and William, three months born in March. Children Leonidas and Mount Etna were born in Missouri. Lola, Clay and William were born in Texas. It appears little William died as an infant. William is the Sheriff and Jailer of Waco, Texas with five prisoners also listed. His personal estate is $1,000.

The family moved often, around Texas, back in to Missouri and Arkansas. William is buried in Bradley County, Arkansas in 1877.

The 1880 Whiteville, Jefferson County, Arkansas Census has son Mount Morris, 23, brother Clay, 15, brother "Telefus" (William), 8, and mother O Celestia, 44. Mount Etna is a farmer, Clay works as a printer.
