Emmett Snow was born December 22, 1888 in Lawrence County, Indiana. He was the first born child to John and Rebecca Graves Snow. He only completed 8 grades of schooling but with the hands on training from his dad became very knowledgeable in a lot of things. He helped with the building of the house, smokehouse and cellar that was built on the farm. He also worked alongside his dad with the farming as was indicated on the 1910 census. December 25, 1913 he married Charlotte Grace Hanning (b. Jul 29, 1891) in Vanderburg County, Indiana and they gave birth to a son, Harold E. Snow (b. Dec 27, 1914), at some point they moved to Vincennes, Indiana and began working with his cousin Frank Lucian Oliphant who was the co-owner of the Vincennes Bridge Company. When World War I broke out he registered with draft board on June 5, 1917 and listed his residence as being 232 Portland, Vincennes, Indiana. He also listed his employment as a bookkeeper with the Vincennes Bridge Company.
In order to keep from fighting in the war he went to Newark, New Jersey to help build ships and became an instructor at the shipyards. He moved his family there and when Burgess turned 20 years of age he also moved out there and worked as a riveter on the submarines. Luckily for them the war ended soon thereafter, but they stayed on to continue working in the shipyard for about another year or so. Sometime later they all returned to Vincennes, Indiana where Emmett got a job working once again for the Vincennes Bridge Company whereas he became foreman over the bridge construction.
