BARBARA ALICE CHENEY WHITE
November 7, 1933 to August 11, 2016

Barbara Alice Cheney White, 82, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2016 at her home. Barbara was born November 7, 1933 to John Flemming Cheney and Vera Goodell Cheney in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She had three older brothers, Marcus, Louis and Jack.

Her family lived on a ranch and at three years of age her mother had to go into the hospital for surgery during a cold wet storm in which her father caught severe cold while caring for the animals. This rapidly turned into pneumonia and he passed away. Her mother suddenly became ranch manager and struggled to keep family and ranch going. Some ranch hands were hired from time to time of which some tried to take advantage of the young widow, but she would have no nonsense and they were fired and soon the word got around that you didn’t mess around with that widow Cheney.

Barbara gained many of her mother’s traits early on and added a quick wit and a pleasant personality that she maintained throughout her life. In due time her mother married Thornton Richardson who brought more members to the home.

Since winters were long and harsh in Jackson Hole, the family sold out and moved to Nampa, Idaho where Barbara finished her schooling. In High School she earned her Girls Athletic Association letter from participating in various sports. Since her bus ran late, it wasn’t uncommon to find her out on the football field kicking the ball for the players until her bus arrived to take her home.

After graduation she opted to go to Dental Assistant Training in San Francisco after which she took a job with an oral surgeon in Salt Lake City. Next came an opportunity to work for Dr. Lee in Nampa, Idaho. She drove her old Ford car from Salt Lake to Nampa by herself and worked for Dr. Lee until a young man thought she ought to be his wife and she agreed so she and Clarence L. (Lee) White were married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple June 1, 1955.

His work took them around the Mtn. States area for many years. It was not uncommon to move in their mobile home three to four times a year, but one year they set a record eight moves.

During his military service, as he was stationed in Japan, she stayed home in Nampa during which time she stayed active in her church and some sporting activities.

Upon his return from active duty they resumed their nomadic life and their first son, David was born in Casper, Wyoming. Many more moves created a decision for hubby to go to college and the moves stopped for some time. In due time Douglas was born and full time mom was in full swing. She saw her husband through college and then proceeded to support her three men in various scouting responsibilities as the boys earned their Eagle Scout awards and hubby was awarded the Silver Beaver award for his work with the boys.

While all these other things were going on she became talented at crocheting, knitting, quilting, and tried her hand at oil painting. A large saw hangs in the home that attests to her talent, but the move to Meridian lost the coach’s direction and she had to give up the idea of becoming another Grandma Moses. Numerous people have been recipients of these talented gifts.

This lovely lady leaves behind a husband, two sons, eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren as well as one brother and numerous nieces and nephews.

A viewing will take place at Summers Funeral Home, Ustick Chapel, 3629 E Ustick Rd, Meridian, ID on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
