Born ninth in a family of ten children to Willard Greene Richards and Lusannah Emeline Clark. The family were Mormon pioneers homesteading in Alberta, Canada. By 1920 they had moved to Salt Lake City where his father had been born.

Kent married Ruth Ellen Belnap Dewsnup November 18, 1955 in Salt Lake, Utah. Her first husband had been killed in WWII.

Kent and Ruth became parents to one daughter, Linda Christine. She died in 1981.
