Thurzetta "Etta" Jewell Poff, 88, of Salem, Va. passed away Friday, November 24, 2006. Some knew her as Etta and many knew her as Nanny Poff. She was born September 25, 1918 in Montgomery County, Va., a daughter of the late Oscar C. and Florence Butt Jewell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leonard S. Poff; a brother, Curtis Jewell and a great-grandson, Caleb W. Ward. Mrs. Poff was a homemaker and attended Calvary Baptist Church. Her surviving family includes, two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Glenn Peterson and Brenda and Cleve Pagans; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Sandra Poff; two brothers and sister-in-law, Gaylord and Doris Jewell and Robert Jewell; and two sisters, Georgia Mills and Martha Mills; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, November 27, 2006 at the Chapel of John M. Oakey and Son, Salem with the Rev. John Riggs officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, November 26, 2006 at the funeral home.
