Bertha Ellen was born to Franklin Smith and Julia Ellen Arnold in Howard County, AR 1895. Bertha's dad died from the awful Typhoid Plague in 1909 when she was fourteen years of age. Her mother gradually became blind. As her mother's eyesight worsened she (Bertha) along with her four sisters would line up to get her hair fixed. Following the death of her dad she and her sisters operated the farm until she married. Following her marriage she was a wonderful partner and best friend to he husband. She was a wonderful mother. She was a very sensitive caregiver to parents, nieces and nephews. She was loved and appreciated by family, extended family and neighbors. She was a devout Christian.
