Helen Hertha Hummel was born to Ernest Henry Boege and Hertha Amanda Knackstedt, on January 28, 1930, the youngest of six children.

Helen grew up on a farm outside of McClelland. She was baptized at Zion Congregational Church in Treynor and was confirmed in the same church. She attended country school until 8th grade when she began working for Mrs. Thomas, so she could pay her way through high school. She graduated from Oakland High School with the class of 1947.

In high school she took “normal training” classes so she could follow her dream of teaching school. She began teaching in the rural school system at Center, then Washington townships in the fall of 1947. She moved into the Oakland school system in 1957 (now Riverside schools) where she taught full time until her retirement in 1997. She couldn't stay away from teaching so she substituted for another 10 years.

She married Jack J. Hummel, the love of her life June 12, 1949 at the Congregational Church in Oakland of which she was a lifetime member.

They had 3 children: Carole, David and James.

Helen earned her B.S. And M.S. Degrees from Drake University by taking evening and summer classes while teaching full time. She was recognized by Drake in 1997 as an Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Alum.

She earned numerous awards for her teaching, but was most proud of all the students she taught. She was a lifetime member of ISEA and NEA.

After Jack died in 1978 she became an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, season ticket holder, and was always on a bowl tour.

Helen was a member of Eastern Star and twice Worthy Matron. She also served as Mother Advisor for the Oakland Rainbow Assembly.

She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her parents, brother Lawrence, sisters and brothers-in-law Minnie (Malvin) Ivers, Dorthy (Harley) Griffith, and Grace (Alvin) Ivers. Also Brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law Glenda (Darrell) Perdue, Harry (Ruby) Hummel, Sport (Kathryn) Hummel, Don (Darece) Hummel, Veryldene (Martin) Kolby, Marjorie (Lyle) Bates, Peggy Hummel, Rilma Hummel.

Survivors include daughter Carole (Larry) Lieb of Carroll, IA and sons David (Ruth) Hummel of West Des Moines, IA, James (Mary) Hummel of Council Bluffs, IA.
