He attended Bluefield College and graduated from the University of Richmond in 1942 and the Medical College of Virginia in 1945. After internship he served as a Captain in the Medical Corps, U.S. Army in Trieste, Italy. Following a residency in pediatrics at MCV, he practiced in Bluefield, W.Va., establishing The Children's Clinic. After 21 years of a busy practice there, he returned to the Medical College of Virginia teaching general pediatrics for 26 years, retiring as Associate Professor of Pediatrics. He was awarded numerous teaching honors from medical students and pediatric residents.
In difficult cases his opinion was often sought. His reassuring and confident manner with patients lives on in many of the pediatricians and nurse practitioners in the state. The Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics presented him its Lifetime Achievement Award as a "pioneer in the field and for a professional life worth emulating."
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Sarah Amis Bruch; and children, Mary Anne Bruch and Thomas A. Bruch. He is survived by children, William Mark Bruch Jr. (Anita), Sarah Bruch Rose (Jeff), John S. Bruch (Jane Anne); grandchildren, Amy Greene, Will Bruch, Gwen Michaelman, Thomas Bruch, Sherri Rose, Sean Rose, Deanna Suelzer, Danielle Weber, Hannah Bruch and Virginia Bruch. Surviving brothers include Bob Bruch of Bluefield W.Va., and Don Bruch of Richmond. William was a resident at Cedarfield, Henrico, Va., and was an active member and servant of St. Bridget Church, a member of Knights of Columbus and Hermitage Country Club.
The family will receive friends 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday (today), at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., where a Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at St. Bridget Catholic Church. Private family burial will take place on Sunday, March 6, in Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to MCV Foundation, c/o VCU Children's Hospital of Richmond, 1006 E. Marshall St., P.O. Box 980275, Richmond, Va. 23298.
