William was the grandson of Richard L. Hussey, a Francisco, IN, blacksmith who brought his family to Gibson County from Kennebec County, Maine, in 1821. William's father was raised on that Gibson County farm, married twice and became a school teacher, settling on an 80-acre farm in NE Hart Township, Warrick County by 1880. That's where William was raised just east of Lynnville, near the Pike County border.

He was still living at home, age 26, teaching school, like his father, on the 1880 U.S. Census the year before his first marriage. They were neighbors, just around the bend from David McWilliams who owned a 120-acre farm that shared it's NE boundary with the R. P. Hussey farm.

William's first wife, Mary McWilliams, daughter of David (above), died after they had been married 12 ½ years. She gave him seven children, three of whom died in infancy. William then married her younger sister, Jane.

Mary and the infants who died were buried here with the McWilliams family. Most of the children were born in Pike County, IN, as it appears the family settled there from the mid-1880’s through about 1906. By the 1910 U.S. Census, they are living in Hart Township, Warrick Co. That census was taken in April and William died in October. He suffered a 10-year illness that required a doctor's care from May 1910 until his death. Jane married a Lon Grange in 1915 and died in 1928.
