Martha Ann Beard was born July 19, 1826, in Kentucky, a daughter of Hugh Beard and Esther McCroskey, born circa 1776, in Augusta County, Virginia, a daughter of David McCrosky, born circa 1741, in Scotland and Grizelda Grace Poage, the second child of John Poage of Rockbridge County, Virginia. Martha's mother died in 1839 and her father married, secondly, Jane Reed. On January 8, 1849, in Scott County, Kentucky, George married Martha A. Beard.
