Mr. Rauls, 70, was born at Herbine (Cleveland County) and spent most of his life in Southeast Arkansas. He was reared by his Uncle, Hollis 'Bo' Rauls.
His association with Arkla came at the Pine Bluff Arsenal, where he first worked for 15 years for the Diamond Alkali Chemical Company (bought by Arkla) and where he served in various warehouse positions for another 15 years. He transferred to Arkla Gas Co. in Pine Bluff when the chemical plant closed, and worked his way up to payroll clerk after a few years.
He was pretty good with numbers and he did a little banking on the side, said son Jackie Rauls of Pine Bluff.
Rauls said his father was kind and earned a reputation as someone who would loan a co-worker money between paydays.
When Friday would come up, he'd get his money back, Rauls said.
Mr. Rauls retired in 1982 and, although he had not been much of a fisherman, then became an avid angler. His favorite spot was on Lumsdon Resevoir, located South of Pine Bluff, with his favorite fishing partner, another retiree, Guy Sullivant. "Dad told me they had the same day off" Rauls said.
Mr. Rauls also maintained a farm in Herbine, caring for cattle and keeping the place in working order. Until he started fishing, that was pretty much his recreation, Rauls said.
Rauls said his father was named for the famous boxer, Jack Dempsey, but that the initials J.D. have since been used for 2 more generations, although with different names.
Mr. Rauls was a member of Olive Street Missionary Baptist Church.
Other survivors include his wife, Maxine Hyatt Rauls, a daughter Freda Rauls Haynie, of North Little Rock, Jackie Rauls, son, of Pine Bluff, and 5 grandchildren.
