Merland L. Carlson, 84, of Fargo, ND, formerly of Page, ND, passed away Friday, July 15, 2016, at Sanford Health in Fargo.

Merland Leif Carlson was born April 12, 1932 at Mayville, ND, the son of Oscar and Phoebe (Solberg) Carlson. He was raised and graduated from high school in Dazey, ND. Merland met Arla Larson while working at Smith's Hardware Store in Fargo. The couple married on September 26, 1953 in South Dakota. They lived in various communities before moving to Page in 1965. Merland served as president and cashier of the Page State Bank for almost 40 years. After retiring, the couple moved to Fargo in 2002.

He was a member and served on the various boards of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Page. Arla and Merland also were the janitors of the church for a time and also belonged to the Parish Partners. After moving to Fargo, they attended and later became members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was very community minded serving on various boards. Merland and a friend opened and operated the Page Theatre for a number of years. He ran the school scoreboard for many years, enjoyed playing cards, golf, coin collecting, yard and gardening, waltzing, square dancing and attending the Hosfest in Minot.

Merland especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. He will be fondly remembered for his love, devotion and care of Arla.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his wife: Arla; his children: Tim (LeeAnn) Carlson, Valorie (Mark) Christensen and Todd Carlson; five grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: Rollie (Gladys) & Jerry (Viola) Carlson.
