Professor Poplett spent his boyhood days in the Guthrie neighborhood. He later choose teaching as his vocation. He attended the old Gibson High School. Graduated from Normal University, Normal, Illinois. Received his BA degree at Armour Institute, Chicago, and a few years later his Master's degree at North Western University.
He started his career at Mattoon, Illinois, and from there to the Maywood Proviso High School. He had started his thirty fifth year being superintendent of the Manual Art's department. When he entered as instructor there, the enrollment was six hundred and now is four thousand.
On June 24, 1914, he married Fannie Reynolds. They made their home at Maywood, later moving to their new home in River Forest. He was member of the Presbyterian Church since boyhood, also a member of the Masonic Lodge and Rotatory Club. To be busy and useful was the joy of his life and no task was a burden to him.
Dr Spalding conducted the services at his home city and services here were held in the Lamb's Funeral Home with Rev. R.M. Luedde officiating.
