J. D. Gilpin, Editor, Dies Tuesday
No longer will the Headlight-Herald be edited by Mr. Gilpin.
Jonathan Delbert Gilpin, 70, editor of this publication for the last 32 years, died Tuesday, January 30, of a heart ailment. He had been troubled with this heart condition for five years.
Funeral services will be held from the Methodist Church today at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Paul Folkers will officiate. Interment will be in the Tracy Cemetery.
One of ten children, Mr. Gilpin was the son of Joshua and Lucinda Gilpin. He was born January 10, 1875, in Van Wert County, Ohio. When he was a small child, his parents moved to Tuscarawas County, where he lived until 16 years old. In 1891 the Gilpin family moved to Wayne County, Nebraska, where Mr. Gilpin made his home until he entered college.
He attended the University of Nebraska, at Lincoln, for three years. After transferring to the University of Minnesota, he received his degree in education in 1909. Following graduation, he was superintendent of schools at Wayzata, Minn.
Purchasing the Tracy Headlight in May of 1912, he later bought the Tracy Herald, combining the two papers.
On August 1, 1906, he married Grace Larson at Tracy. To this union were born four children: Gladys, Lewie, Jonathan, and Genevieve.
He is survived by his wife, his four children, two sisters, Mrs. C. P. Thomas of Dillon Montana, and Mrs. Susan Dunlap of Cadiz, Ohio, and one brother, J. S. Gilpin
of Farmland, Indiana.
A member of the Tracy Methodist Episcopal Church, he served for years as a member of the official board, remaining active in church affairs until advancing years and poor health forced less active participation.
Relatives from a distance attending the funeral are: Miss Gladys Gilpin of Altadena, Calif.; Lt. and Mrs. Lewie V. Gilpin, Coral Gables, Fla.; Miss Genevieve Gilpin, Minneapolis; and Mrs. A. N. Webb of St. Paul. Since he is assigned to duty with the navy in the Pacific area, Ensign Jonathan Gilpin will not be able to attend the funeral services.
