Ruth Arlene Pfeffer, 89, died at Burlington Care Center, Burlington, Iowa, on Wednesday, May 28, 2014. She was born January 15, 1925 in Burlington, the daughter of Robert W. and Mary Clara Meller Steingreaber Sr.

Ruth was born and raised on a farm north of Burlington along with five sisters and one brother. She married Gregory Joseph Pfeffer on January 8, 1951 in Burlington, Iowa. He died in June of 1990. After marriage to Gregory they were stationed in Germany and various other bases throughout the western U.S. before settling in the Chicago area. Along with being a homemaker, she also worked at the Amlings Garden Center in the Chicago area for fifteen years. Upon Gregory's retirement, they moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, where Ruth pursued her interests in gardening and bird watching. Ruth was also a great Scrabble player and crossword puzzle solver. Ruth had resided in Burlington since 1996. She was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include one son Thomas (Carol) Pfeffer of Madison, Wisconsin; two grandchildren, Adam Pfeffer of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Leah Pfeffer of Madison, Wisconsin; two sisters, Helen Burg of Burlington, Iowa and Margaret Ostrom of Talono, Illinois; sister-in-law, June Gieslman of Burlington, Iowa; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother Robert Steingreaber Jr, three sisters, Eleanor Mohler, Frances Dunigan and Mary Dodge.

Following cremation a private family ash committal service will be held in Keokuk National Cemetery, Keokuk, Iowa.
