He was a son of Salathiel Newnham and was born in DE. He moved to Jessamine Co., KY around 1797 possibly as part of a contingent of Methodists around Wilmore, KY. He moved to Clark Co., KY around 1807 and bought a 100 acre farm near Pilot View and Schollsville, KY around 1812. From" "The Life and Travels of William B. Landrum...Circuit-
preaching was then taken to the house of Elijah Newnham, who was an old Methodist and a very pious man. His wife was a sensible woman and a true and devoted Christian. There we had regular preaching from year to year every two weeks"". Also from the same source "About the middle of February I paid my parents a visit, and while I was there I read two letters from my brother in Illinois, which gave information of the death of Mother Newnham, who had been faithful until death. I had known her long, and regarded her as a true pattern of piety, and a bright ornament to the Christian character. For a great many years her house was a preaching-place in Clarke county, Ky." He moved to Pike Co., IL when he was in his 70s in 1840 and is shown on the Pike Co 1840 census as a Nunam. His wife died there Oct., 22, 1847 and he died around 1850. He may be buried in the Taylor-Martin Cemetery or Hornback Cemetery w/o a headstone.
I wish to correct some bad info on various places on the internet. Salathiel, father of Elijah, was probably married twice, to a Mary LNU and (possibly) to an Elizabeth Foreacres. Various people have confused this Salathiel with his grandson in Rockingham County, NC who MAY have married an Elizabeth Kearns although if you look at the records there it may have been a Salathiel STONE or STONEMAN who married an Elizabeth Kearns on that date in 1840. Salathiel Newnham/Newnam was a surety for the marriage bond. I suspect Salathiel Stone was his grandson.
