Albert Rawles was age 5 in the 1850 Bloomfield, LaGrange, Indiana census with John Rawles, 53, and Frances, 35. Albert was recorded with 7 siblings in 1850. John was 15; James, 13; David, 12; Henry, 10; Nelson, 7; Milton, 3; & Brenton, an infant.

Fanny Rawles, age 40, was recorded in Iowa, Doniphan, Kansas Territory in 1860. Other Rawles family members were David, 23; Nelson, 10; Albert, 13; Milton, 12; Benton, 11; Fletcher, 7; Mary, 26; & James, 2 months.

David Rawles was recorded in the 1859 voter census in Doniphan County, Kansas Territory, but John Rawles was not. David Rawles had settled in the territory in 1857.

Frances Rawles, age 45, born in Kentucky, was also recorded in the 1865 Iowa, Doniphan, Kansas state census, as the Head of the family. Nelson was 22; Albert, 20; Milton, 18; Brenton, 16; & Fletcher, 14.

Albert Rawles, age 18, born in LaGrange County, Indiana, enlisted on June 25, 1863 in the 13th Kansas Infantry at "Camp Jim Lane" in Bourbon County, Kansas. He was 5 feet, 8 inches tall with gray eyes and light hair & complexion. (Kansas Civil War enlistment record) (Albert's brother, Nelson, had also enlisted in Co. A, 13th Kansas Infantry at age 19 years and 9 months on August 28, 1862 at Troy, Kansas.)

Albert was recorded with wife Matilda, age 19, and Henry, age 1, in the 1870 Iowa, Doniphan, Kansas census. "Matilda" is a mistake for Amanda Otilla (nee Brown,) who received a Civil War widow's pension as Amanda Neudling in 1894, filed from Missouri. She was also recorded as Amanda O. Mix in a pension record filed from California, both as the widow of Albert Rawles of Co. A, 13th Kansas Infantry.

Family information from Ancestry records the marriage of Amanda Brown and Albert Rawles on February 7, 1867 in Doniphan County, Kansas. Amanda remarried to John Walker in 1873 in St. Louis, then Florian Neudling in March of 1881, and then James R. Mix in Fresno County, California.

John Rawles & Amanda (nee Brown) were the parents of Henry Rawles, Louis M. Rawles, and Minnie E. Rawles, according to family information and California death index information.

Albert's death date is recorded on the Civil War headstone record for this cemetery.

(IN RE:) . . . . .your inquiry regarding James/John Rawles at East Springfield Cemetery in LaGrange County, IN.  Researching this veteran was indeed a challenge.  As far as I was able to determine, the John Rawles/Rawls on the 1850 Census in Bloomfield Township in LaGrange County is the father of Milton, etc by his second wife, Frances. There are so many James and Johns and so on that I was nervous making the "final" decision on the supplemental headstone, however, I stand by my research (gulp!).  Anything else, please let me know!  Jean Fremion-McKibben
