She was a cheerleader and basketball player for Winyah High School having perfect school attendance. She attended Winthrop University and received a bachelor’s of science degree from the College of Charleston. She received a master’s degree from Clemson University in Secondary Education. She was a teacher and administrator for the Abbeville County School District, retiring in 2002. She lived the majority of her adult life in Abbeville, SC and cherished the many lifelong friendships she established while raising her family there. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for 55 years, serving as the Worthy Matron in Abbeville in 1977-1978. She was a Sunday school teacher, lay conference delegate, chairman of the Agnes Rogers Circle, member of the Building Committee and member of the Wesley Sunday School class at Main Street UMC in Abbeville. She and her husband, Jim, moved to Lexington in 2009 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. She was a member of Mt. Horeb UMC and the Discipleship Sunday school class and was active in several bible studies. She most enjoyed spending time with her family attending Gamecocks sporting events, playing cards and other games and vacationing at Dollywood, Disney World and the beach.
Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Jim, of the home; sons: Kerry Murphy (Ailsa) of Lexington; Kurt Murphy (Amanda) of Lexington; five grandchildren: Tommy, Tristan, Ainsley, Kinsey and Katherine Murphy of Lexington; and a brother: Hal (Dianne) of Florence, SC.
A Celebration of Life will be at 1 PM on Thursday afternoon, June 23, 2016 at Mt. Horeb UMC in Lexington, SC. Officiating will be the Reverend Faye Stephens. The family will receive friends at Mt. Horeb UMC beginning at noon before the service. Burial will be in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens in Georgetown, SC at 11 AM on Friday, June 24, 2016. The Rev. Dr. Dora Gafford will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt Horeb UMC, Main Street UMC or Epworth Children’s home. Barr-Price Funeral Home assisted the family.
