Robert Lee “Bob” Hill, age 82, resident of Fort Scott, KS, died Saturday, June 18, 2016, at Country Place Living, Fort Scott.
He was born in Seneca, MO, on November 16, 1933, the son of Beulah Violet Crowder and Leonard Harvey Hill.
He attended Seneca schools, graduating from high school in 1951, where he had excelled in football and basketball. It was during this time, he acquired the nickname “Bullet”. Recruited by the late Carnie Smith, he was a four year letterman on the Pittsburg State football team. He was named All Conference both his junior and senior years and team captain his senior year. In 1955, Bob was named the Pitt State Outstanding Senior Male.
Hill was one of the first three to be commissioned as an officer from the Pittsburg State ROTC program. While serving with the 16th Regiment, First Infantry, Fort Riley, KS, he was the starting tackle on the post championship football team and taught at the NCO Academy.
As an agent for MetLife Insurance Company for nearly 40 years, he qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table 10 times and Conference 27 times.
Bob married Bernita Delaine Golden on August 1, 1953, and they had two sons: Robb and John.
They raised their sons in Fort Scott where Bob was President of Jaycees, Kiwanis and the Bourbon County Shrine. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church, a Little League coach and served for 20 years on the Fort Scott Community College Board of Trustees.
After retirement, he was a cattleman, a sports fan, especially of the Gorillas, and a volunteer for Feed the Families. He was also devoted to working for the Shriners Children’s Hospitals. Bob read a lot including several newspapers and news magazines and about politics and military history.
Survivors include his wife Bernita of the home; two sons, Robb and his wife Carolyn, West Des Moines, IA, and John and his wife Carol, Fort Scott; three grandchildren, Lauren Hill, Cedar Rapids, IA, Bryan Hill, Des Moines, IA, and Meredith Hill, Fort Scott; a brother, Joe Hill and wife Pat; sister-in-law Audrey Crutcher and husband Tex; and nieces and nephews Greg Crutcher, Kim Crutcher Hart, Wendy Hill Milliman and Sandy Hill.
Rev. Dr. Jared Witt will conduct funeral services at 10:00 AM Wednesday, June 22nd, at the First Presbyterian Church.
Burial will follow in U. S. National Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post #1165 V.F.W.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Tuesday evening at the Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to either the First Presbyterian Church or the Hill Family Scholarship at Fort Scott Community College and may be left in care of the Cheney Witt Chapel, PO Box 347, 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, KS 66701.
