John Daniel Colvin was born in Payson, Utah County, Utah, the fourth child of Lachoneus Moroni Colvin and Annie Francis Stark. His family left Payson for Arizona in 1879 when John Daniel was three years old. However the family was delayed in southern Utah when his grandfather, David Sands Colvin, was injured in a wagon accident near Escalante, Utah, and the family spent the winter and spring in dug outs. They continued their trip to Arizona, arriving in Brigham City, Arizona, in the fall of 1881. His father worked on the railroad to earn money for the family. His mother died in Brigham City on June 18, 1882, after giving birth to his youngest brother.

After moving to Show Low, John Daniel's father moved his motherless family to Eden about 1883. When he was a young man of twelve, John Daniel helped his father haul freight from Globe to Willcox.

On February 14, 1900, John Daniel married Pernecia Jane Smithson. She was born October 11, 1875, in Beaver City, Utah, the daughter of James Daniel Smithson and Elizabeth Dorrity.

John Daniel and Pernecia were the parents of seven children: Lulu Pearl (David Hawkins), Daniel Wilford (Viola Carpenter), Hollis Rollo (Mayme Marchant), Lorena Blanche (Melvin M. Hancock), Thomas Harold (Etha Levora Marvin), Ernest Nolan (Maxine Roofe), and Bonne Lyle (Betty Ozavich).

After their marriage, John Daniel and Pernecia moved to Coontown where they lived on a farm. They worked for Barney Norton at his ranch at Cedar Springs for several years, as well as on his farm in Eden. Later they purchased a farm of their own. Besides farming, they raised chickens and hauled chickens and eggs to Globe to sell. At one time, they owned the Eden Dance Hall for which they purchased one of the first phonographs in the valley.

On November 30, 1928, Pernecia Jane passed away and was buried in the Eden Cemetery. Two years later, John Daniel married Leona Brinkerhoff Marvin who was born on April 12, 1894, in Tuba City, Coconino County, Arizona. She was the daughter of David Brinkerhoff and Lovina Seyena Lee.

John Daniel and Leona were the parents of one daughter, Melba Jean, who married Noble Leon Daniels.

In 1950, John Daniel and Leona moved to Safford where he raised vegetables and flowers. He would give them away to his many friends and family.

He left on a trip with Leona to Taylor, Arizona, where her mother was celebrating her birthday. The altitude was too high for his heart, and he died on February 5, 1953. He was buried in the Eden Cemetery. Leona is living in Safford at this time. (The Garden and How It Grew, Eden 1881-1991, pages 133-34)
