Catherine was a daughter of Jacob Thomas and his wife, Catherine. Catherine married twice. Her first husband was Pleasant James Adams, Sr. They were married in 1824 in North Carolina. Catherine and P. James had ten known children. Nine of their children were:

After James' death in 1846 Catherine married a second time. On May 16, 1854 she married Adam Shanks in Ray County, Missouri. Catherine was Adam's third wife. Adam Shanks was born in 1795 Virginia and died after June 1880 in Missouri.

FAMILY NOTE: In family records there is a daughter Bersheba/Barsheba Elizabeth Adams listed for P. James and his second wife, Catherine. Barsheba's birth year is circa 1835 and born in Virginia (?). She married a Mr. Mann (probably in Missouri). She was known by her middle name, Elizabeth.
