Rhudene Fanchier Gaither, 83, of Sweetwater died at 6:05 a.m., Friday, August 23, 1996, in her home. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in McCoy Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Mark Spence officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gaither was born May 7, 1913, in Alexander and married Ardis D. Gaither, Sr. on Feb. 24, 1939, in Brownwood. She taught school for 36 years--the first nine in rural schools in Comanche and Erath counties, and 27 years in Sweetwater at Philip Nolan and East Ridge elementary schools. She was a graduate of Howard Payne University.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ardis and Alice Gaither of Sweetwater; a brother, Thomas Benson of San Marcos; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 5, 1995, and by a daughter, Betti Brennan.

Mrs. Gaither had a lasting positive impact on so many children fortunate enough to have her as a teacher.
