James B. Arendale was the second son of Joel Blackwell Arendale, Sr. and Elizabeth Dare Arendale. He is descended from the early American Dare family, relatives of the legendary Virginia Dare of the Jamestown settlement, first baby of European descent born on the continent. His father was listed in the Confederate Citizen's file, having helped the cause of the Confederacy through providing meat for the troops. James had a farm just north of his father's, and it straddled the state line.

According to the book "The Heritage of Jackson County Alabama Vol. 36", he was the husband of Mary Paralee Price Arendale and his birth and death dates are April 30, 1833 and August 25, 1885. They married on March 12, 1851.

Prior to marriage, he fought in the Civil War in the 3rd Regiment Company G of the Confederate Cavalry (Howard's). His rank was 1st Lieutenant. A Civil War record shows he was hospitalized in July, 1862 in the CSA Hospital in Danville, Virginia. One interesting thing about his service record is that he and his cavalry were captured by the Union Army, and while on a train heading to Union prison, the train was then recaptured by another Confederate cavalry and the prisoners were released.

After the war, he returned to Marion County, Tennessee and then to Bridgeport, Alabama to marry and serve as a farmer. Siblings moved to other places of opportunity after the war. After his death, it was left to his daughter Minnie Susan Arendale and her husband Sherrod Absolem "App" Williams to farm the land left to Paralee Arendale by her father, Daniel M. Price.

He is buried adjacent to the grave of their daughter, Minnie Susan Arendale Williams, and her husband Sherrod Absalom Williams in the Mount Carmel graveyard near Bridgeport, AL.

Their children were:
Mary Ann Arendale Harris
Thomas J. Arendale
Daniel Henry Arendale
Katherine Altezar Arendale James
Joseph J. Arendale
Minnie Susan Arendale Williams
Lula Arendale
