James A. Raben, 85, lifelong resident of Ridgway, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, in St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville, Ind. James was born in Ridgway on the family farm Sept. 4, 1921, the son of the late Leo and Millie (Bahl) Raben. James was married to the former Carrie (Morris) Raben, who preceded him in death in 1985. James was a farmer his entire life, with a work ethic second to none. He truly loved to work and take care of the farm, he always said that he planned on leaving his farm in better shape than he got it. He had been active in his community also, serving as a school board member, Farm Bureau member, Rocky Branch Water District , 4-H leader and many other noteworthy organizations. He was a Catholic by faith, belonging to the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ridgway. James was a good husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include three sons, Bill (Brenda) Raben and Jim (Marilyn) Raben, both of Ridgway and Bob (Theresa) Raben of Picayune, Miss.; a brother, Carl Raben of Galatia; eight grandchildren, Beau Raben, Bronwyn Raben, Braxton Raben, Matt Raben, Joe Raben, Christina Scates, Jordan Raben and Rachael Raben; three great-grandchildren, Drew, Shelby and Jaxston; a special friend, Linda Fink; and many other nieces, nephews and other family members.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Raben; two brothers, Dennis and Cyril Raben; and two sisters, Margaret Hatfield and Rosemary Taggart.


A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ridgway with Fr. Mark Stec officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Ridgway. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, 2006, at Cox and Son Funeral Home, Ridgway, with a prayer service 7:30 p.m.
