FUNERAL SET FOR PEMBROKE, OFFICE-DESIGN INNOVATOR

Funeral services will be Saturday for Adrian Herbert Pembroke, civic leader and widely recognized innovator in the office-design field. He died Tuesday at a Salt Lake City hospital.

Mr. Pembroke, 86, was a founder of the Executive Furniture Guild that established the concept of filling business offices with more than just desks, chairs and files. He did this while president of Pembroke's, an exclusive Salt Lake City office supply store that also dealt in art supplies. The business led the industry in office design after Mr. Pembroke became the first office supplier to hire an office designer when the store was located at 24 E. Broadway (300 South).

Mr. Pembroke was a president of the National Stationers & Office Equipment Association and founded the 3M Business Products Council and served as its president in 1962. He was active in the Greater Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Merchants Association.

The family business was established by his grandfather, A.H. Pembroke, in 1883. It was housed in several downtown locations and is now located at 341 S. 500 East. Mr. Pembroke's granddaughter, Vicky Pembroke Jackson, is president.

Aside from his business success, Mr. Pembroke was chairman of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Water Board; was president of the Salt Lake Exchange Club; served two presidencies of the Salt Lake Rotary Club; and was a member of the Fort Douglas Country Club, the Salt Lake Country Club and the Alta Club. He was also a founder of the Bleacher Utes, was active in promoting small business and was a benefactor of the University of Utah College of Business.

He was born Aug. 22, 1904, in Salt Lake City to Afton Kimball and Adrian B. Pembroke. He married Camille Stohl in February 1930 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He graduated from East High School and the U. of U. School of Business and did graduate studies at Northwestern University. He was captain of the U. of U. track team and was quarterback on the Ute football team.

He is survived by his widow and son, Robert S., both Salt Lake City; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jack.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, where friends may call today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. The family suggests contributions be made to the University of Utah School of Business.
