Served, United States Navy from 1841 to 1861. Served aboard USS Portsmouth during the Capture of San Francisco during the Mexican-American War, 1846, served in the US Coast Survey 1851-1855, transfer of HMS Resolute to the UK, 1856, USS Dale in the African Squadron (suppression of the Slave Trade) 1857-1858, and instructor, US Naval Academy, 1858-1861.
Served, Confederate States Navy from 1861 to 1865. Officer aboard the CSS Virginia (ex-USS Merrimack) during the Battle of Hampton Roads, Superintended the Submarine Battery Service (SBS) from 1862 to 1864, dispatched to Europe to procure technical items in 1864, commanded the blockade runner "City of Richmond" in 1865.
Merchant officer in the UK 1865.
Commanded the "Henrietta" in expedition to Valparaiso, Chile, 1866.
First commander of the Maryland Oyster Police (or Navy), now the Maryland Natural Resources Police, 1868-1872.
Commanded the Torpedo Bureau of the Argentine Navy from 1876 to 1884.
Retired to Paraguay in 1885.

His friends and acquaintances included Admiral Franklin Buchanan, CSN, and the artist James A. M. Whistler. He debated Jefferson Davis over the innovation of using electric mines. He argued strenuously for protecting the habitats and regulating the harvesting of oysters.
