Joseph lived in Freeport and New Munich his entire life. He married Elizabeth Bockholt at New Munich in 1900, at the age of 41 his wife passed away after complications in child birth in 1921. At the time of Mrs. Benolken's death Joseph had 8 children, the oldest being 17 years and the youngest a baby boy.
Joseph married again in 1922 to Bernadina Stroeing, Bernadina was 32 years old at the time and they had 3 sons.
