Mary was born in Somerset, Pulaski County, KY to parents Jennie (nee Smith) and David J. Reiss. She was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church, and attended schools in Indianapolis IN and Houston TX. She graduated from John H. Reagan High School, met and married William Clyde Pleasant. She was very active in his insurance agency, and had a very acute business sense.
