Jess met his bride, Debbie Griffith McAngus, at University Church of Christ, while the two were attending the University of Texas. Upon his graduation in 1973, they moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where Jess started his career in chemical engineering at DuPont, transferring to Beaumont, Texas in 1975. In 1980, Jess co-founded Pilko & Associates, where he worked as an air quality consultant for 25 years.

Jess co-founded Spirit Environmental, an environmental quality consulting business in Houston, in August 2005. It has since expanded to four locations including, Austin, Texas; Denver, Colorado; and Lafayette, Louisiana. With 35 years of consulting experience, he known as the “Air Guru,” being involved with air consulting work since virtually its inception.

Jess was very active in his church and got delight in sharing the vegetables and herbs from his garden. When he wasn’t working, he preferred to be on the green hitting golf balls or on the slopes of Colorado. His greatest pride was his family, especially his grandchildren!
