English Nobility. Son of James I's favorite, after the murder of his father, he and his younger brother Francis were brought up with Charles I's children at court. He was driven into exile with Charles II but later negotiated with Cromwell, estranging himself from the Stuarts. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London by Cromwell in 1658, later being released on payment of a heavy fine. Upon the return of Charles II he was back in favor. His affair with the Countess of Shrewsbury, whose husband he had killed in a duel, caused a public scandal; this, along with his unpopular policies, forced his political retirement. He died from a chill caught while hunting in Yorkshire
