Obituary for Roger L. Dixon
Roger L. Dixon was born and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Ferguson Baptist Church where he was baptized when he was very young. He graduated from Riverview High School in 1964 and left for Hannibal LaGrange in Hannibal, Missouri. This conservative Baptist school was not a good fit so he and some buddies transferred to Ouchita University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. This was not a good fit for opposite reasons than Hannibal and he knew another change was in order. Again, he and some friends transferred to Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar, Missouri. He finally felt he was where he was supposed to be—probably because this is where he met Kathy. He completed his Bachelors degree in August of 1968 and he and Kathy began their 47 year marriage one week later in St.Louis.
Roger started working for Probation and Parole in 1969. The draft board sent a message saying he was needed and the decision was made to join the Army and go to Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia. It was during this time his daughter, Kes was born. He went on to MP school in Fort Gordon Georgia and then was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant to Fort Riley, Kansas for the remainder of his 3 year tour.
Roger, Kathy and Kes returned to St. Louis and Roger returned to his job at Probation and Parole. He completed his Masters degree at Webster University during those first years back.
It doesn’t matter who Roger Dixon was...what matters is who you remember Roger Dixon was.
He was always a tower of strength to his family and friends. Struggling and conquering were a part of his everyday life. There were so many moments that took our breath away—too many to count. He attacked challenges with an internal strength, with his faith in God, with a love for life, with amazing grace and almost always with a Smile on his face. He had a genuine concern for others.
Most importantly, Roger believed in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
He believed in friends who were with him every step of this
journey...those who included him in their plans and understood when he had to cancel.
He believed in Kes and Ryan and drew so much strength from their support and love.
He believed in Derek and Lucy. He was so proud of them and their love and support for the two most important people in his world. He drew strength from their families.
He believed in Tyler, Dylan, Kylee, Wren and Sage. He planned and dreamed of their futures and didn’t hesitate to let them know what he expected of them. He didn’t take their support for granted but it was always, always there. They were always curious about his legs and watched his amputation and healing process with awe and wonder. To them, he was BIONIC. Their support was priceless. They always wanted to show him off to their friends and of course, made him know the value of the word “priceless”. Roger always believed in being fair. He loved his job but even more than that, he loved his friends at work. It goes without saying that he had pets at work....and you know who you are. He would have moved mountains to support everyone who worked for him. He always had your back and he knew you had his.
Abraham Lincoln once said: “People are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” Roger faced so many adversities but made up his mind early on to be a fighter and to be happy.
He will be missed every single day. Remember him fondly for who he was, for what he believed in.
Be the fighter he expected all of us to be...NEVER give up; Be strong and love life.
That is what he would wish for us.
