BIOGRAPHY:

Joseph Maurice Manera was born on August 12, 1920 in Colinga, California to Joseph Louis Manera of Treviso Italy and Esther Irene (McShea) Manera. Joe had three sisters: Eileen, Violet Ruth ‘Ruthie’, and Rosemary Julia ‘Mary’. One sister, Rose Mary, died as an infant.

When Joe was 17 years old, 1938, he joined the Civilian Conversation Corp, Los Angeles District, Saugus California. In November of the same year, Joe joined the Army at Fort Worden, 14th Coast Artillery, in Washington state. 1939-1942, Joe served on the US Mine Plantar Niles to Panama, Balboa, Canal Zone and Yerba Buena Island. Joe enlisted in the US Navy while in Panama in 1942. Joe covered the Pacific: Hawaii, Midway, Marshal Islands, Admiralty Islands, Leyete Island and Philippines; Guam, Alaska, Adak, Aleutian Islands, and Umalaska Islands. Joe became Chief Boatswain while in the Siberian Islands 1952. 1952-1961 Joe also served in Korea and Japan. He faithfully financially supported his mother and sisters during his enlistments.

During Joe's time in the Navy, his two sisters were placed in a Catholic Foster Home due to his mother working long hours. When Joe was on short leave one time in California, he went to the Catholic Home and took his sister Eileen to the circus for the day. She states to this day 'it was the best birthday present she ever had!' (Julie had already left the home by then, and Eileen was all alone.)

In 1961 Joe moved to Tacoma, Washington and went to work at the joint base Fort Lewis-McChord Military Base.

Joe met and married Lois Marie (Roberts) Orendoff March 14, 1964, and with this marriage acquired one step-daughter, Linda. After Linda left home to get married, one daughter, Laureen Michelle, was born to Joe and Lois who was the joy of his life.

Joe and Lois divorced at one point for a short time, and then remarried.

As a hobby, Joe liked to fish, hunt, and photography, developing his own film. He retired in 1981 from Fort Lewis-McChord Military Base in Tacoma, Washington.

Joe passed away on September 7, 1990 in Tacoma, Washington, after a long illness. Joe was 70 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; daughter, Laureen; step-daughter, Linda (Jerry), 3 step-grandchildren Penny, Gary and Cecilia; and his sister, Eileen, nieces and nephews.
