Mr. Delton Akins, Sr., age 71, died Monday morning at the East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County attended Portal High School. Delton served in the National Guard for several years. He was employed with Jack's Cookie Company and T.J. Morris Company for several years before beginning his 35 year career with Derst Baking Company. He was of the Baptist faith. Delton loved playing softball and spent many years playing on local teams, most memorable were the times playing for Jake's Amoco and Statesboro Floor Covering. His greatest love was his family and the times spent with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Neva Newton Akins and Rayford Akins and three brothers and a sister-in-law, Arnold Ray and Bunny Akins, Gary Akins and Herman Akins.
Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Irene Sapp Akins of Statesboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Kenny Anderson; a son and daughter-in-law, Del and Nan Akins; four grandchildren, Lauren and Allyson Anderson and Payne and Mincey Akins; a sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Tommy Lennon and a brother and two sisters-in-law, Randy and Sandra Akins and Sherri Akins, all of Statesboro. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive visitors on Tuesday from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00am in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Olan Strickland officiating. Interment will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Craig Thompson, Jared Akins, Eric Moody, Justin Akins, Rudy Womble and Jay Akins.
